Short answer: For Hornbill Festival 2026 (1 to 10 December at the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama, near Kohima), you have three main choices of base: Kohima town, for the most listed hotels and homestays near the venue; the villages beside the venue, mainly Kigwema and Phesama, for homestays within reach of the festival ground; or Dimapur, the gateway town with the airport and railway station, as a fallback. Book from official lists, confirm everything directly with the host, and get your ILP before you travel.

  • Dates and venue: the Directorate of Tourism, Nagaland lists Hornbill Festival for 1 to 10 December 2026. It is held at the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama, about 10 to 12 km from Kohima.
  • Closest stays: the official Tourism Nagaland homestay list has a cluster of homestays in Kipfüzha, Kigwema village, next to the Heritage Village, and one in Phesama.
  • Most choice: Kohima town has the most rooms on the official lists, including hotels on the Kohima district site and around 20 homestays and paying-guest houses on the Tourism list.
  • Fallback: Dimapur (about 70 to 74 km from Kohima, by official figures) has the longest hotel list. You will have a long road trip each day, though.
  • Book early: in comments published on 1 December 2025, Nagaland's Tourism Secretary said a shortage of accommodation remains a challenge during the festival. Book once your dates are firm.
  • Permit: Indian visitors who are not indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland need an ILP, and foreign visitors need a PAP through e-FRRO. See our ILP guide for Hornbill Festival 2026.

Why this guide

The usual question after "how do I get there?" is "where do I sleep?". This page compares the three places most visitors choose for Hornbill week and shows you where the official accommodation lists are. We used government pages first, then one trade-press interview. We do not name or rate individual hotels or homestays, and we leave out room rates, phone numbers and walking times, because we could not confirm them on an official page today.

For travel to Nagaland itself, see How to reach Nagaland from Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Guwahati. For the full festival plan, see our Hornbill Festival 2026 first-timer guide.

Hornbill Festival 2026 at a glance

The Directorate of Tourism describes Hornbill as a ten-day annual tourism promotional event organised by the State Government. Check the Tourism Nagaland website for any update before you book.

Option 1: Kisama area villages (Kigwema, Phesama, Jakhama)

Why stay here

According to the Directorate of Tourism, the name Kisama comes from two villages, Kigwema and Phesama, on whose land the Naga Heritage Village was built. Staying in one of these villages puts you closest to the festival ground.

The Kohima district website lists Phesama, Kigwema and Jakhama, together with Mima, Pfuchama, Viswema and Khuzama, as villages under the Jakhama administrative circle.

What the official list shows

The Tourism Nagaland page "List of Paying Guest and Homestay in Nagaland" includes:

  • 14 homestays in Kipfüzha, Kigwema village, one of them described as "near Naga Heritage Village"
  • 1 cottage in Phesama (spelt "Phesema" on the list)

We could not find an official list of homestays in Jakhama. If you are offered a stay there, ask the host for the exact location and road distance to the Kisama gate, and check the property on a map before you pay.

Things to weigh

  • Homestays are run from family homes, so facilities vary. Ask what is included: attached or shared bathroom, hot water, heating, meals and parking.
  • December nights in the Kohima area are cold. Incredible India gives Kohima's December range as about 3.2 to 20.9 °C, so ask how the room is kept warm.
  • If you plan to go back into Kohima town in the evening, ask your host how guests usually get there and back.

Option 2: Kohima town

Why stay here

Kohima is the state capital. It has more listed hotels and homestays than the villages near Kisama, and it is where the Directorate of Tourism has its office. Kohima War Cemetery is in the centre of town, and the Kohima district site notes that it is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. That makes it easy to add on a visit.

What the official lists show

  • The Kohima district website has an "Accommodation (Hotel/Resort)" page listing 17 hotels (page last updated 25 March 2026).
  • The Tourism Nagaland homestay list has around 20 homestays and paying-guest houses in Kohima town, in areas such as Minister Hill, Lerie, Bayavu Hill and Forest Colony.
  • Further out, the same list has 8 homestays in Khonoma, 5 in Dzuleke and 3 in Jotsoma. The Kohima district site describes Khonoma as about 20 km west of Kohima.

Things to weigh

  • Kisama is about 10 to 12 km from Kohima, so you will travel to the venue every day.
  • Nagaland's Tourism Secretary has named traffic management, along with accommodation, as a challenge during the festival, though he said both had improved in recent years. Leave early on busy days.
  • Our How to reach Kisama guide covers the Kohima to Kisama leg in more detail.

Option 3: Dimapur as a fallback

Why stay here

Dimapur has Nagaland's only civil airport and a railway station on the main line of the North East Frontier Railway. The Dimapur district site puts it about 69.4 km from Kohima, and the Kohima district site says about 74 km. If you cannot find a room in or near Kohima, Dimapur has by far the longest official hotel list.

What the official lists show

  • The Dimapur district "Accommodation" page lists 94 hotels in Dimapur and 13 government-approved homestays in Dimapur and Chümoukedima (page last updated 7 November 2025).
  • The Tourism Nagaland homestay list also has a few entries in Dimapur and nearby villages.

Things to weigh

  • Going from Dimapur to Kisama and back every day is a long road trip. One option is to stay in Dimapur for your first and last nights only, and closer to Kohima for festival days.
  • Taxis and Nagaland State Transport buses run between Dimapur and Kohima, according to the Dimapur and Kohima district sites. Check fares and timings locally.

Book early, and book through official lists

In an interview published by TravelBiz Monitor on 1 December 2025, Nagaland's Tourism Secretary said that a paucity of accommodation continues to challenge the organisers. He also said that, with few mainstream hotels, the government relies on homestays in a big way during Hornbill. Book as soon as your travel dates are fixed.

Where to find registered stays

  1. Tourism Nagaland homestay list: tourism.nagaland.gov.in/homestay. The page shows no date, so confirm with the host that they are still operating.
  2. Kohima district hotels: kohima.nic.in/accommodation.
  3. Dimapur district hotels and approved homestays: dimapur.nic.in/accommodation.
  4. Government-approved tour operators (if you would rather book a package): tourism.nagaland.gov.in/travel-operators.
  5. Incredible India's Kohima page (planning background, not a booking list): incredibleindia.gov.in/en/nagaland/kohima.

If anything on these pages looks out of date, the Directorate of Tourism's contact details are at the bottom of the Tourism Nagaland website.

Before you pay

  • Confirm your dates, the number of guests and what is included in writing.
  • Ask for the exact location and check it on a map.
  • Ask how the host prefers to be paid and what happens if you cancel.
  • For permits, use only the official portals linked on this page.

Homestay etiquette: the basics

A homestay is someone's home, not a hotel. A few simple habits help:

  • Share your arrival time and let your host know if your plans change.
  • Follow the house rules your host explains, and ask if you are unsure about something.
  • Ask before you photograph people, their home or their belongings.
  • Keep noise down late at night, especially in villages.
  • Ask your host about anything to do with local custom. Do not assume.

ILP: sort it before you book

Under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873, anyone who is not an indigenous inhabitant of Nagaland needs an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter the state, according to the official ILP FAQ. Indian tourists apply online at ilp.nagaland.gov.in. The Dimapur district site says the online system has been in use since 1 January 2025.

Tourists do not need a guarantor, but the form asks for a local contact. If you have already booked, ask your host whether you may name them.

Foreign visitors need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) through the e-FRRO portal, as well as a foreign tourist ILP. These rules have changed recently, so check e-FRRO before you travel.

Full details: Nagaland ILP guide for Hornbill Festival 2026 and Nagaland permits: ILP for Indians, PAP for foreigners.

Do you run a homestay?

If you host guests in Kohima, Kigwema, Phesama, Jakhama or anywhere in Nagaland, you can list your homestay for free on Hornbill AI Studio. There is no commission, and we check every listing before it goes live.

What to confirm locally

  • That your homestay or hotel is still operating, and the current rate
  • Road distance and travel time to the Kisama gate during festival week
  • Any temporary traffic or parking rules around Kisama
  • Hot water, heating and meals
  • Your ILP (or PAP and ILP) before you travel
